Planning the new University of New Mexico (UNM) West campus at Rio Rancho offered an unparalleled opportunity to develop a well-integrated university campus with a planned new town center. The Rio Rancho City Center was developed simultaneously with the UNM West campus, the Sandoval Regional Medical Center, and a new branch campus for Central New Mexico Community College. The plan uses the urban structure of the town and extends this pattern to form an armature of open spaces, streets, and plazas. Design guidelines convey the overall character, structure, and physical form of the campus appropriate to its context and purpose.
