South Columbia Street is a major vehicular and pedestrian route through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus. To make the route more pedestrian-friendly, the new streetscape design narrows the roadway and provides a bike lane. The project works in conjunction with the Campus Master Plan and Design Guidelines, also developed by Ayers Saint Gross, to create a pedestrian-oriented landscape. Signal and crosswalk improvements as well as pedestrian safety zones are also elements of the new streetscape.
