Ayers Saint Gross was invited to participate in a comprehensive master plan for a new university city. In order to redevelop urban areas, the province set out to create a university city on a 10,000 acre island to house several university campuses with shared amenities, cultural, residential, and retail facilities totaling over 100 million gross square feet. A central district of the island included an ecopark containing a sports complex, conference center, library, scenic lakes, landscape, and gardens. After 19 months, Guangzhou University City housed 140 buildings on 10 university campuses, accommodating 200,000 students, 20,000 teacher,s and 50,000 staff.
