The new College of Business is sited on the edge of historic Bowman Field. A plaza with gathering spaces under a canopy of formal tree groves serves as the development’s centerpiece, knitting contemporary architecture into a historic campus precinct. The plaza interacts with the terrain as it transitions into a monumental stair, a feature that draws inspiration from two iconic sources: the Spanish Steps in Rome and the waterfalls of South Carolina. Integrated terrace seating provides a place for spectators to view military drills and campus events on Bowman Avenue. A table-top pedestrian crossing connects the plaza with a reconfigured pedestrian forecourt in front of nearby Sikes Hall. Wheelchair-accessible walkways connect the precinct to the core campus path network. Elegantly simple plantings in stormwater bioretention facilities convey a commitment to environmental stewardship.
