South Columbia Street Streetscape

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC

VIEW PROJECT STATS
Completion: 2009
Cost: $1.2 million
Size: 2.3 acres

South Columbia Street is a major vehicular and pedestrian route through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. To make the route a more pedestrian-friendly campus landscape, the new streetscape design narrows the roadway, provides a bike lane and creates a pedestrian-oriented landscape. The project works in conjunction with the Campus Master Plan and Design Guidelines, also developed by the Ayers Saint Gross. Signal and crosswalk improvements as well as pedestrian safety zones are also elements of the new streetscape.
